REMEMBER the fallen

TEACH our children the value of freedom.
The back of the card shows the beautiful Christmas wreaths placed on markers in the snow. I thought this was a GREAT idea and ordered some. My experience handing these to our veterans, and current service men and women, has been more of a blessing to me than I ever imagined. I would like to share a few stories.
My husband and I were visiting Arlington Cemetery and were just approaching the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We stood off to the side under some trees. Next to us was a gentleman in a wheelchair. He looked at me and very proudly told me his dream was to come to see the Changing of the Guard and his son-in-law brought him. I asked if he was a veteran and he told me he served during WWII.
My husband reached in his wallet and handed him one of these cards. He looked at it, read it, turned to us and said, “No, thank YOU for allowing me to serve this great nation. It was my honor. I will keep this card forever.” At that moment, tears were streaming down my face.
Another time while waiting in an airport terminal I noticed a young man sitting off to the side. He was dressed in his fatigues along with his backpack. I took a card to him and said to him, “Thank you for your service.” He looked at the card and replied, “Ma’am it is my honor. Thank you.” I just wanted to hug this young man that was leaving his friends and family behind to defend our country.
I have made U-turns in airport terminals and “chased” down someone to hand them a card. At first they think this lady is crazy and is trying to sell me something, but when they read the words, the response is always the same, “It is my honor.”
To me there is no greater thing I can do than to thank these people and this card is a tangible way of doing that. It is something they can keep and look at when times might not seem so good for them. I can’t buy them fancy things or do glamorous things for them, but, I CAN thank them for what they have done for this country, or for what they are currently doing.
That is a gift I don’t think our service men and women can hear enough of. I thank Wreaths Across America for making these cards available to all of us. I thought it would be a gift I could give a soldier, and it is, but it is also a gift I gave myself. It is simply a gift of letting someone know you care and appreciate them which warms my heart beyond measure. God Bless America!”
