DAR Chapters Engage with the Mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach

“We are united by a love of country.” Enthusiasm, patriotism, and desire to serve the community are the foundations of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Denise Doring VanBuren retired after years as an executive in the electric and gas utility industry only to retire and go on to serve as DAR’s forty-fifth President General. Denise tells us she’s thoroughly enjoying herself. “I represent 178-thousand of the most patriotic, vibrant women I think you’ll find anywhere around the globe. I can’t help but enjoy it.”

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a women’s service organization around the world that just celebrated the 130th anniversary of their founding. “I like to say there’s something for everyone in the DAR, Denise states. “We are patriotic women who are united in a mission to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. We have nearly three thousand chapters worldwide and about forty national committees, but one of the most representative of our organization is our DAR service for veterans. We’re one of the largest volunteer groups at VA medical centers as an example. We are grateful for what our men and women in uniform did for our country, and we want to show them how grateful we are and how much respect we have for what they did for our nation.”

The DAR is working with Wreaths Across America to express that gratitude as they engage in the mission to remember, honor, and teach. As the countdown to National Wreaths Across America Day 2020 continues, Wreaths Radio is featuring interviews with volunteers across the country, and many of them represent local DAR chapters. On a national level, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring the Wreaths Across America Mobile Education Exhibit.

You can join a DAR chapter. However, as a lineal society, you have to be able to document your connection to the Revolutionary War. “We do require documentation of your descent from a patriot of the American Revolution. Someone who aided the cause of our independence.”
