On 14 DEC 2024, Cadets at Prescott Composite Squadron 206 participated in Wreaths Across America joining over 4000 cemeteries across the country in a ceremony honoring deceased veterans.
The cadets’ day started at 0815 as they unloaded and unpacked over 3000 wreaths, staging them around the Prescott National Cemetery for laying at grave sites after the ceremony.
At 1100, cadets participated in the ceremony as wreath-stand sentries, flag bearers, and uniformed services wreaths presenters. C/2LT Seth Baillie, Capt Jason Ebersole, and Maj Doug Baillie presented wreaths for the US Space Force, US Air Force, and US Coast Guard respectively.
After the ceremony cadets participated in laying wreaths at the grave sites of veterans, proclaiming their names, thanking them for their service to our country, and rendering hand salutes. Several cadets also rendered salutes at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier which drilled home the honor and respect due.
The overall experience was life-impactful for cadets. C/CMSgt Yarbrough was able to honor a great grandfather buried in the cemetery and afterwards exclaimed “it made me feel more aware of what they did for our country”. C/Capt Ebersole, who was posted at the tomb of the unknown soldier, described the experience as a “Solemn ceremony,…so many veterans whose names won’t be spoken anymore… you get to remember their names and their service”.
C/A1C Cosper stated that it made her feel “proud to be a member of Civil Air Patrol”, and it was “personal when you said the veteran’s name out loud”. C/Amn Edwards commented that it impacted him as he found “a lot of Edwards” on the the grave stones. C/A1C Davis stated the “it was awe inspiring and really affected me how many people paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country”. CADET Ewing, who is new to Civil Air Patrol commented that “it made me feel great because they sacrificed their lives to make our lives better”.
