Here’s a clear overview:
Purpose
The mission is to Remember, Honor, and Teach:
- Remember our fallen U.S. veterans,
- Honor those who serve, and
- Teach the value of freedom to the next generation.
What They Do
Every December, volunteers gather to lay handmade evergreen wreaths on the graves of veterans. The most well-known event happens at Arlington National Cemetery, but thousands of ceremonies take place simultaneously at over 4,000 locations nationwide and abroad.
Each wreath is laid by a volunteer who often says the veteran’s name aloud to ensure they are remembered.
History
- Started in 1992, when Maine wreath maker Morrill Worcester had a surplus of wreaths and decided to place them at Arlington National Cemetery.
- The idea grew through community support and became a national movement by the mid-2000s.
- In 2007, Wreaths Across America became an official nonprofit organization.
The Journey
The wreaths are made in Maine and then transported by volunteer truck drivers in what’s called the “Wreaths Across America convoy.” The convoy travels to Arlington with stops for ceremonies, especially at schools and veterans’ memorials, teaching patriotism and service.
When It Happens
National Wreaths Across America Day takes place each year on the third Saturday in December.
