He was sent home on February 12, 1865, with measles and typhoid dysentery in helpless condition dying a month later, March 18, 1865. His company carried his name on their roll until surrender in December 1865. He was the son of George Smith and Lavenia Phillips and husband of Mary Ann Smith Smith, who was the daughter of John Smith and Catherine Young.
