In 1942, my mother went to enlist a few weeks prior to her 18th birthday and was turned away due to her age. Once she turned 18, she returned and completed her enlistment. She became a WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She was eventually based in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho at the Farragut Naval Station, where she learned to drive and transported German prisoners of war to their workstations.
