<i class="material-icons" data-template="memories-icon">account_balance</i><br/>William M Christian, Army<br/><div class='remember-wall-long-description'>In the Civil War, William M. Christian.served in the 1st Regiment, Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, but was captured in June 1864 during the Union siege of Petersburg, VA. Initially held in the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond, he escaped while being transferred to the even more hellish Andersonville, GA POW camp. He was recaptured in West Virginia, but soon escaped again, and made his way safely to Union lines in Fayetteville, WV. After his return to Haverhill, along with his father-in-law Robert White, he built the house at 304 Washington St. in the late 1860s. Christian worked as a carpenter until he was well into his 80s, and died in 1922. He is buried in Hilldale cemetery, Lot 745, Grave 3. The house served as the Willard G Cogswell Branch of the Haverhill Public Library from 1957-1973. John A. Hollett, SSG USAF 53-57 Uncle John inspired me to join the Service. When he passed unexpectedly in early 2001 I was asked to present the flag to my Aunt. At the time it was the most difficult and yet the most priviledged event of my military career. Rest peacefully Uncle John!

My Dad, Albert Cryder, was a US veteran and a true patriot. He flew the American Flag outside our home in Sayre Pennsylvania for many many years.
