The Grenadier was sunk in enemy waters and her crew was taken POW. Lyle was a POW in Camp 3 Fukuoka Japan for three years experiencing starvation and torture. A book about the Grenadier crew POWs "No Ordinary Joes" documents those years as does a series of Life Magazine photos taken of the crew at liberation. Lyle was a patriot his whole life and died at 86 years old in his home area of Crofton, Nebraska.
