Green<br/><div class='remember-wall-long-description'>I think all Marines, officers and enlisted, remember the day they joined the Marine Corps, and all Marine officers remember their first day at Quantico. I joined the Marine Corps via the PLC Combined Program during my junior year of college in February, 1967. I still recall that strikingly dressed Marine captain approaching me in the student center stating with complete assuredness, “Are you Bill Green?” Immediately correcting my posture and sitting a little more erectly in my chair, I acknowledged with an uncertain sense of importance that I was indeed that man. He then looked squarely into my eyes and asked me if I'd like to lead forty-five men in combat in Vietnam. I think I was too afraid to say no, and well, the rest is history. Coming from a family of hard charging athletes and eagle scouts did little to mentally prepare me for my first day at Officer Candidate School. It seemed nothing was ever fast enough or good enough to please those seemingly insane instructors. The constant repetition of “hurry up,” bends and thrusts and pushups was the never ending scenario until finally, at last, taps. As I lay in my rack that first evening, I thought surely I would awake the next morning and all of this would have been nothing more than a wild dream gone insanely bad.
