On December 19, 2026 at 12:00 pm, NY0049P - American Legion Auxiliary Merrick Unit #1282 will be helping Long Island National Cemetery to Remember and Honor our veterans by laying Remembrance wreaths on the graves of our country's fallen heroes.
Please help us honor and remember as many fallen heroes as possible by sponsoring remembrance wreaths, volunteering on Wreaths Day, or inviting your family and friends to attend with you.

In Memory of William Richard Knobel, who honorably served in the United States Navy. William Richard Knobel, honorably served in the Navy from January 10, 1967 to November 12, 1970. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (2 bronze stars), Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea). Mr. Knobel passed away due to service-connected illness and is survived by his loving wife. Mary Knobel.

Directions to Cemetery
Our Wreath Laying once again will take place within Long Island National Cemetery.
The tractor trailers will be loaded and the wreaths will be stationed at specified locations PRIOR to our noon ceremony. The wreaths WILL NOT be placed until after our ceremony which takes place at noon on December 19th. The ceremony will take place between section R and the DSS (Distinguished Service Section).
Parking Instructions
Parking will be on any of the numbered rows within the cemetery. There will be signs for you to go and where to park. Please remember to get there early since Parking will be at a premium.Ceremony and Volunteer Information
We are happy that you are willing to help with our Wreath Across America ceremony at Long Island National Cemetery. Please do not forget to register to volunteer! This way you will receive updates about the cemetery.
Our ceremony will take place at noon with the wreath laying immediately following. Wreaths will be in boxes at the assigned areas throughout the cemetery. Maps will be provided to show where to place the wreaths at the cemetery.
Here are some things to remember about the ceremony:
- Everyone of all ages and backgrounds is welcome.
- Please help ensure that all participants get the opportunity to place a wreath.
- Please follow the location coordinators instructions on where to place wreaths, as well as "how" they should be placed.
- We especially appreciate volunteers willing to help clean-up. Please check in with the location coordinator if you are interested in helping with the clean-up which takes place in January.
The most important thing to remember is to have a memorable experience participating in the ceremony. Thank you for your help in achieving our mission to remember, honor and teach.
