Nancy Higgins Willey's Obituary
Nancy Higgins Willey (94) passed away May 24, 2026.
Nancy was born April 1, 1932, in Columbia Falls, daughter of Donald and Frances Drisko Higgins. She graduated from Cherryfield Academy and Washington State Teachers College.
Her teaching career included Augusta, Harrington High School, Narraguagus High School, Milbridge Junior High School, retiring in 1998.
Nancy was well known locally as The Baseline Lady, conducting historic and geological tours across the historic Baseline Road in western Washington County.
She is survived by her son, Richard Willey, Cherryfield; daughter, Jill Willey Escamilla and husband Patrick, Austin, TX. Grandchildren, Philip Willey and wife, Jada, Addison and Eryn Escamilla, Austin, TX. Sister Betty Higgins, Corinth.
Nancy was extremely dedicated to her profession and her students. When gymnasiums were going to be added to the Cherryfield and Columbia Falls Elementary Schools, she went before the school board and urged stages be included in the plans. She was a supporter of the Arts, writing and directing several plays during her teaching career.
After retiring she enjoyed several years as a museum tour guide at the National Wreaths Across America Museum in Columbia Falls.
Nancy's influence extended far beyond the classroom. She was a mentor, historian, storyteller, and friend whose passion for teaching shaped the lives of countless students over the years. A devoted patriot and advocate for her community, she shared the history of Washington County and the stories of our nation’s heroes with enthusiasm and pride.
Her dedication to community, country, and future generations was evident in everything she did. The lessons she taught, the stories she shared, and the example she set will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
At her request, there will be no funeral. But a celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, June 14, at 1 pm at the Balsam Valley Chapel in Jonesboro. The community are invited to attend. For those unable to join in person, it will be streamed live on the Balsam Valley Chapel Facebook page. Following the celebration, there will be an opportunity to place flowers at the “Nancy Willey Legacy Orchard” located on the Balsam Valley Tip lands.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Cherryfield Academy or the Ark Animal Shelter, Cherryfield.
